advertising examples:
o
The CNN Pipeline
news clip located on the Materials
tab of your student web page for Week Three.
o
Select one of the
following links to view the video ads available at that Web site:
- Answer the following in regard to each of the two examples in a 100- to 200-word response:
o
Who paid for each
example to be created?
o
Can you detect a
slant—that is, a secondary opinion conveyed by the examples’ creators?
o
What does each
example reflect about society at large? Is it credible? Explain your answers.
The
news clip was created by Larry King and his channel affiliates. The main theme here was reflecting on
September 11, 2001. There was a small
indication that what happened in New York could lead to Giuliani running for
the presidency, this could be construed as a secondary opinion. I believe King and Giuliani expressed very
well what the society at large was thinking at the time the video was taped. I
feel both Larry King and Rudolph Giuliani are credible individuals. Since the interview was mostly about
remembering 9/11 and how they feel even after the fact, there were very little
actual facts to be credible about.
Progressive
insurance paid for the Progressive commercial ads. Any secondary opinion I can pick up would be
just the opposite of the main idea. The
main idea would be that Progressive has cheaper rates, therefore secondary
would be other well-known agencies have higher rates. What this example is
reflecting about society at large is their need for lower bills and lower rates
for insurance. Progressive says, they
know insurance is necessary and should not be expensive. I believe Progressive to be a credible
company and their reflection of society is credible. Everyone is looking for lower rates on all
their bills.
- Answer the following in regard to the news clip in a 50- to 100-word response:
o
Are you skeptical
of the sources’ credibility? Why or why not?
o
Do you detect any
bias? Why or why not?
I would not be skeptical of the sources’
credibility. Larry King is a well-known
host and has many reputable people on his show.
He also has a reputation for being a reliable news source. I feel sure that Larry King would have only
credible sources on his show. It was
definitely an emotional subject but since bias means “unjust or impartial
preference”, I did not find any from either individual.
- Answer the following in regard to the video ad on one of
the links above in a 100- to 200-word response:
o
Does the ad make
a claim?
o
What fear or
desire does the ad play into?
o
Does it target an
existing fear or desire or does it try to create a new fear or desire?
o
Does it try to
invoke feeling, use admirable people to persuade, or describe a common
situation?
o
Would you make a
purchase based on the information presented?
The
Progressive ad I watched claims to be lower than several other well known
insurance agents. This plays in with
everyone’s desire to have the same benefits for lower payments. This desire already exists as people all over
are losing their jobs or being reduced in hours. We are all trying to find ways of saving
money or stretch our dollars. The Progressive
lady, Flo, is a very upbeat individual and invokes a happy feeling just
watching the ads, with all their bright colors and happy people. She also invites you to watch her with her
sunny personality as she explains the benefits of switching to Progressive. She seems excited to be helpful and loves to
save people money. If I needed insurance
this ad would definitely entice me to make a purchase with Progressive
Insurance Company.
