Summation

1.  Go to Appendix E in the syllabus and reformat the paper there using the Axia style guidelines in the Writing Style Handbook. Attach this to a post.
2.  Answer the questions:
a.  What are the formatting differences between the memo and an academic paper?
b.  In what ways do audience, purpose, tone, and structure affect the format of a memo?
c.   In what ways do audience, purpose, tone, and structure affect the format of an academic paper?
d.  Attach these questions to a post.
3.  Write a memo from Joe Gilmore to Christine Lancaster about her idea for next training series. Attach this to a post.
4.  Use the Rubric as a checklist to make certain the assignment is complete.
5.  There are 3 total posts: re-formatted paper, questions, and memo.

The biggest difference between a memo and an academic paper would be in the formatting.  Memos should be single paced, left justified meaning no indentions, and subject is included at top of paper with the sender and recipient.  Academic papers are double spaced, paragraphs are indented, includes references or citations, and a title page with author’s name.
When it comes to the format of your paper, you need to consider audience, purpose, tone and structure.  Memos are generally business communications aimed at coworkers or bosses.  The purpose can be anything from a new idea to update of the progress on a current project.  Your tone can be either business or interpersonal.  Academic papers are scholarly representations of researched subjects created for professors to show a student’s understanding of the intended subject.

Re:
Idea for Next Training Series

Your idea to incorporate an emotional intelligence training series to our training of employees is a great one.  Ms Smith wrote an intriguing paper, although there is no statistical information to see.  Put together some statistics from companies who have already begun using emotional training to train their employees and we will meet next week to discuss your ideas on a complete training series on emotional intelligence.

Thank you for your continued hard work.  I look forward to meeting with you.
