·         Review the criteria for full-sentence outlines in Organizing Your Research Paper on the student Web site.

·         Create a full-sentence outline that includes effective arguments and counter arguments to support your thesis. Outline only the body of your paper. Remember to avoid bias and fallacies and to include rhetorical devices that strengthen your writing.

·         Answer the following:

o    Where did you place the most effective arguments in your paper? Explain your reasoning.
o    How did you address counter arguments without weakening your own premise?

·         Post the outline as an attachment.

Even though pharmaceutical drugs can be very helpful in curing diseases, they can cause more harm than good due to side effects, an individual's dependency, and the breakdown of our natural immune system.


I.    What is pharmacology and what is the definition of pharmaceutical drugs?

A.  Pharmaceutical drugs is defined as any chemical substance intended as use in treatment or prevention of disease.
1.   Such as prescription drugs, which are any drug that is prescribed by a physician.
2.    Over the counter medications are also considered pharmaceutical drugs.

B.  Pharmacology is the study of the effects of chemical substances on living systems.
1.   One part of pharmacology is drug action, or how drugs bind to specific cellular targets or their physicochemical/physical effects.
2.   Another part of pharmacology is study of drug handling, or how the living body processes, absorbs, distributes, and excretes chemical substances.  

II.  What do pharmaceutical drugs do?

A.  Pharmaceutical drugs are used mainly for treatment of diseases or infections.
1.   They can be used to cure short term illnesses such as fevers or the flu.
2.   They can also be used to cure long term illnesses such as cancer.  

B.  Pharmaceutical drugs are used also for prevention of diseases.
1.   Vaccines are one way in which pharmaceutical drugs are used to prevent diseases.
2.   New drugs are created all the time to prevent all forms of cancer.


III. Pharmaceutical drugs can cause as much harm as good.

A.  Sometimes drugs do not cure or prevent the diseases they are meant to prevent or cure
1.   With vaccines, which are designed to prevent, you can still catch the diseases.
2.   Prescriptions medications do not always cure illnesses, which is why there are so many drugs that do basically the same thing.

B.  There are many ways in which pharmaceutical drugs can cause harm.
1.   Individuals who do not educate themselves on the drugs they are being prescribed can take the wrong doses or mix the wrong medications.
2.   Every drug has the potential for many nasty side effects.

IV. Herbal remedies can achieve the same results without all the nasty side effects.

A.  There are many medicinal herbal drugs that can be used in the same ways as pharmasceutical drugs.
1.   Many herbal drugs can be used to prevent and cure the same illnesses.
2.   Since they are not man made herbal drugs have less harmful doses.

B.  Can herbal drugs can be just as effective as pharmaceutical drugs?
1.   Some believe since these drugs are not monitored or regulated by the government some of their harmful effects are unknown.
2.   Herbal drugs have been used for much longer than traditional pharmaceutical medications without the harmful effects on the human body.
