Succession and Natural Selection

2.     CheckPoint: Succession and Natural Selection

         View the Ch. 6 Succession animation located under the Week Three Materials section of your student Web page.
         Post a total of 200- to 300-words in response to the following items:

o    View the succession of the ecosystem in the Succession animation. Is it primary or secondary succession? Explain your answer.
o    Respond to question 9 under the Critical and Creative Thinking Questions in Chapter 6 of the text. Review Ch. 6 on natural selection to help you with your response. If you need additional help with your hypothesis, refer to the following article to see an explanation of how evolution could have occurred in a population of mussels: http://evolution.berkeley.edu/evolibrary/news/060901_mussels
9.  Although most salamanders have four legs, the aquatic salamander shown below resembles an eel. It lacks hind limbs and has very tiny forelimbs. Propose a hypothesis to explain how limbless salamanders evolved according to Darwin's theory of natural selection(158).

The succession featured in the animation is an example of secondary succession. Primary and secondary succession differ in that primary succession is a change in species composition that takes place where there was no soil or vegetation present; Secondary succession is a change in species composition due to some disturbance that destroys existing vegetation and that takes place where there was soil present. The animation showed an already existing forest and small river where beavers made a damn in order to create a pond for their home. This caused a pond to form, the trees to die and new vegetation to grow. With a bog mat forming across the top of the pond and peat growing on the bottom of the pond, over time trees begin to grow again. The end of the animation shows a bog forest and stream where the forest and stream existed before the beavers built their damn. This shows secondary succession, the change to the forest was because of the beavers building their dam.
Darwin’s theory of natural selection basically says the more capable or better equipped species will survive. This includes the same species with genetic differences. The salamander probably lived near water for generation, then a mutation happened and that salamander was better equipped at handling the water in his surroundings. So it prospered and reproduced, his offspring had the same mutation and they prospered. Being better equipped than other salamanders without the mutation, he would beat out the others of his species to food and shelter. This allowed him to live and his offspring to prosper.

Ethnic Groups and Discrimination

2.         Assignment: Ethnic Groups and Discrimination
Resources: Racial and Ethnic Groups, the Internet, and the University Library
Due Date: Day 7 [Individual] forum
Choose an ethnic group to which you personally belong. If you identify with more than one group, choose the group with which you most identify or about which you would like to learn more.
Write a 700- to 1,050-word, APA-formatted essay, answering the following questions:
o Using any of the resources identified above, research to determine if the group colonized or if it immigrated to the United States. Did the group face prejudice, segregation, racism or any combination of the three? If so, how and why? Include your research findings in your essay. You may search through chapters of the text as part of your research.
o Was this group effected by or did it participate in any of the following forms of discrimination? If so, describe:
Dual labor market
Environmental justice issues
Affirmative action
Redlining
Double jeopardy
Institutional discrimination
Reverse discrimination
Glass ceiling, glass walls, or glass escalator
o Do you culturally identify more with the ethnic group you examined,    with United States mainstream culture, or with both equally?
Format your essay according to APA requirements.
                                • Post your essay as an attachment(220).

I do not have one particular ethnic group that I identify with more so than others.  My family’s country of birth has been the United States for several generations.  I do have a few researched and recorded family members born outside the US starting with my great grandparents.  One set of grandparents were born in Switzerland were themselves German, along with another branch that is German also.  Only one other branch is identifiable as country of origin.  My maiden name is Polish.  My grandfather’s grandfather immigrated in 1890 with his family.  His ancestors back several generations up to around early 1700s were records go cold again.  They were all from the same small town in Poland.
Because Poland is the only country I can verify I am descended from, I have chosen the Polish people to make my report about.  My family does not celebrate any Polish customs, and does not identify themselves as Polish.
Polish immigrants first came to North America in the 1600s and settled in Virginia Colony even before Pilgrims arrived.  They were brought as skilled artisans by Captain John Smith, who was an English solider. (Wikipedia, 2009) The skills were vital to the settlement but were excluded by the House and their rights were threatened.  Because of that they launched the first recorded strike against the New World.  The House relented because of the needed skills of the Polish immigrants and extended the “rights of Englishmen” to include the Polish people.  They were then able to establish the first bilingual schools which taught Polish and English.  The powers of the Polish community were eventually overshadowed by the increased warfare with Native Americans.
The Polish fought for the Continental Army alongside General George Washington and one Polish man, Kazimierz Pulaski is credited as saving Washington’s army at the Battle of Brandywine, he died leading a cavalry charge at the Battle of Savannah. He is now called the “Father of American Cavalry” and is commemorated in Casimir Pulaski day and the Pulaski Day Parade.  Another Polish man credited for his service in the Continental Army is Kosciuszko.  He was instrumental in the victories at the Battle of Saratoga.  Both Pulaski and Kosciuszko have statues in Washington D.C. (Wikipedia, 2009)
During the Partition of Poland, the Polish nation forced into three sub groupings; Russian, Prussian and Austrian Polish.    This is most prominent when researching Polish records, in ancestry records you can often find those labels affixed to polish immigrants.  It was mostly done because the Polish country did not truly exist at the time.  It was divided by Russia, Prussia and Austria.  The largest amount of polish immigrants arrived in America during the early 1900s.  A lot of Polish arrivals were not labeled as Polish due to the occupation of Poland by neighboring states and its international status.  According to the 2000 United States Census 667,414 Americans reported Polish as the language spoken at home.
Most Polish immigrants did not intend to stay in America.  They wanted to earn money and ensure themselves a desirable social status in the Old World.  (Wikipedia, 2009) After WWI, and the reborn Polish state, around thirty percent of Polish emigrants returned to the home country.   Polish immigrants did migrate towards specific job types.  American employers considered Polish immigrants better suited than Italians for arduous manual labor.  They took jobs in coal-mines, slaughterhouses and steel mills.
Most Polish people are Roman Catholic, and responsible for the building of the Polish Cathedrals found around the Great Lakes and New England regions. Chicago has the most notable urban Polish American communities and is called the largest Polish city outside of Poland with approximately 185,000 polish speaking Americans.  Many large Polish communities are in Chicago and two of the biggest Polish-Catholic churches featured on the Polish Genealogical Society of America’s website are based in Chicago.(PGSA, 2008)  There are numerous Polish-American organizations located in Chicago, the Polish Museum of America, Polish American Association, Polish American Congress, Polish National Alliance, Polish Falcons and the Polish Highlanders Alliance of North America.  Poles are the third largest ethnic group, after German and Irish, located in Illinois.  Chicago is where my family settled after their move to America and three generations were birthed and lived there until my parents moved us away.  Chicago holds my heart for that reason and even though I never spent much time there I still root for the Cubs and Bears at every game.

Modern Challenges in Immigration

1.         CheckPoint: Modern Challenges in Immigration
Resources: Ch. 4 in Racial and Ethnic Groups and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Web site
Due Date: Day 4 [Individual] forum
Skim these sections of the USCIS Web site (www.uscis.gov): Immigration Forms, Fees and Fingerprints; and Immigration Services and Benefits Programs.
Select an immigrant group from Ch. 4 of the text. Imagine yourself as a current member of that group, and consider the question, “Would I want to immigrate to the United States, and why?” Think about what opinion you would have of the immigration process, including naturalization, the costs, fingerprinting, etc. Consider whether the process would seem easy or difficult for you as an immigrant. Once you have thought about your answers, proceed to the next step of this CheckPoint.
Post a 200- to 300-word summary that answers all of the following questions:
o Should United States government policy favor certain kinds of immigrants?
o Should [citizenship] preference be given to the neediest applicants? The most talented? The most oppressed? The richest?
o Should applications from certain countries be given priority? (Feltey, 2006, p. 11)

I can agree some immigrants might be needier or more desperate when coming to America, but I do not believe any particular race of individuals should be favored, given preferential treatment, or priority. Some immigrants might need more help with citizenship but I do not feel this should fall under the heading of preferential treatment or priority.  If any bias was given, I feel as though this should be done on an individual basis based on the needs of the individual and not have anything to do with race, religion, or country of origin.
We should take care of each individual as an individual and not because of how oppressed or what their reasons for moving might be.  All individuals need help from someone at some point of their lives.  Even though some of us were born here in America, unless you are full blooded Native American Indian, someone in your family immigrated here.  Someone in your family decided America may be better than their own country.  Not every individual got the same amount of help, but all of us are here so they must have prospered.
Some may need special classes to learn the language or customs that exist in the United States but this should not include changes to policy, citizenship, or priority.  I do not agree that other individuals should be special treatment or help just because they immigrated.

Quoting, Summarizing, and Paraphrasing Sources

1.     Assignment: Quoting, Summarizing, and Paraphrasing Sources

·         Resources: Finding, Evaluating, and Utilizing Credible Information; Appropriate Style Guidelines; Appendix D; and Appendix E

·         Navigate to Grammar and Writing Guides in the Center for Writing Excellence
Read Plagiarism: Using Direct Quotations; Understanding Paraphrase and Summary; Understanding Plagiarism and Common Knowledge.

·         Practice note taking techniques by quoting a source you plan to use for your research paper, summarizing a second source, and paraphrasing a third source.

·         Format your sources according to APA guidelines that can be found at the Center for Writing Excellence to cite your sources: http://www.apollolibrary.com/cwe/pdfs/AXIASampleAPAReferences.pdf

·         Complete Appendix E.

·         Answer the following questions:

o    How do you decide which information is noteworthy and which is not?
o    How do you determine whether to quote, paraphrase, or summarize a source?

·         Post Appendix E as an attachment.

If information is relevant to my topic and seems credible, I believe it noteworthy.  Basically I write down everything and sort it out later.  I will use a quote if the information is already well spoken and if I use my own words it will not have the same impact.  I paraphrase when the information is generally correct and I want to use my own words, and when I summarize a source is when I believe there is too much information or not enough and a general overview would be better suited.

Pharmacology being “the scientific study of the effects of chemical substances on living systems”. It is important that we know what each drug will do to the human body before consumption.  Pharmacologists study drugs and their effects in order to determine any harmful effects before marketing and distributing to the public.  They study how the body handles drugs and often ways risk versus benefit.  The drugs then go through clinical studies to determine in a real life scenario how the drugs affect humans before putting on the shelves.

V.J. Wirtz did a survey on individuals over 18 who had purchased prescription medications, and asked a variety of questions to determine how well they knew the side effects of the medicines they bought. Only 11.9% knew the medicines they bought could cause harm and only 6% of those could name at least one side effect of the medication they purchased. (Anonymous, 2009)

Annotated Bibliography

1.     CheckPoint: Annotated Bibliography

As part of the writing process, you must refine your premise several times. Before you eliminate any sources, you must create a record of your research in case you decide to revisit an idea. An annotated bibliography tracks your research and compiles summaries of each source. These summaries are valuable resources for writing your final paper.

·         Resources: Finding, Evaluating, and Utilizing Credible Information; Appropriate Style Guidelines; the Center for Writing Excellence; and the completed Appendix D

·         Review the sample annotated bibliography at the Center for Writing Excellence at http://www.apollolibrary.com/cwe/pdfs/AXIAAnnotatedbibliography.pdf.

·         Review the examples of reference sources at the Center for Writing Excellence at http://www.apollolibrary.com/cwe/pdfs/AXIASampleAPAReferences.pdf.

·         Complete an annotated bibliography of the sources you plan to use in your research paper.

·         Determine what you must do to convert the annotated bibliography to an APA-formatted reference page as part of the rough draft of your research paper. Explain your answer.

·         Post the annotated bibliography as an attachment.

Classified Balance Sheets

1.     CheckPoint: Classified Balance Sheets

·         Write a 200- to 300-word response explaining what information would be found in each of the following groupings on a classified balance sheet and how that data might indicate the future success or failure of a business:

o    Current assets

o    Long-term investments

o    Property, plant, and equipment

o    Intangible assets

A balance sheet contains all kinds of information.  Some of the items you can expect to find on a balance sheet are your current assets, long-term investments, tangible assets and intangible assets.  Current assets are items that you have on hand now and can be measured in monetary value such as inventory, marketable securities, or accounts receivable.  Inventory is items that you use to manage your business.  A car dealership would list their cards as inventory.  The Avon representative would have the items they sell listed as inventory.   Marketable securities are items that can be easily and quickly converted to cash at a reasonable price, such as stocks or bonds. Accounts receivable is any cash you take in everyday while running your business.  Long-term investments are items that take more than ten years to mature.  Your stocks or shares would be listed under long-term investments.  Your tangible assets are items that are physical which can be such things as property, like your office building and the land it is on, plant machinery and property, or equipment you use to run your business.  Equipment covers everything from office supplies to company vehicles.  Construction equipment can also be found under your equipment section of your tangible assets; everything from bulldozers and cranes to shovels and rakes.  Your intangible assets are items of value that cannot be physically touched.  These are items like your brand name, any franchises you own, the trademark you use, or even patent.

Analyzing Credibility

1.     Assignment: Analyzing Credibility
  • Resources: “Giuliani Remembers 9/11” news clip and video ads located at one of the links listed below.
  • Due Date: Day 7 [Individual forum]
  • View and assess the credibility of these media and advertising examples:
o    The CNN Pipeline news clip located on the Materials tab of your student web page for Week Three.
o    Select one of the following links to view the video ads available at that Web site:
·         http://jnjplayer.digisle.tv/
·         http://www.pedigree.com.au/tv/
·         http://www.wendys.com/ads/
  •  Answer the following in regard to each of the two examples in a 100- to 200-word response:
o    Who paid for each example to be created?
o    Can you detect a slant—that is, a secondary opinion conveyed by the examples’ creators?
o    What does each example reflect about society at large? Is it credible? Explain your answers.
The news clip was created by Larry King and his channel affiliates.  The main theme here was reflecting on September 11, 2001.  There was a small indication that what happened in New York could lead to Giuliani running for the presidency, this could be construed as a secondary opinion.   I believe King and Giuliani expressed very well what the society at large was thinking at the time the video was taped. I feel both Larry King and Rudolph Giuliani are credible individuals.  Since the interview was mostly about remembering 9/11 and how they feel even after the fact, there were very little actual facts to be credible about.
Progressive insurance paid for the Progressive commercial ads.  Any secondary opinion I can pick up would be just the opposite of the main idea.  The main idea would be that Progressive has cheaper rates, therefore secondary would be other well-known agencies have higher rates. What this example is reflecting about society at large is their need for lower bills and lower rates for insurance.  Progressive says, they know insurance is necessary and should not be expensive.  I believe Progressive to be a credible company and their reflection of society is credible.  Everyone is looking for lower rates on all their bills.
  • Answer the following in regard to the news clip in a 50- to 100-word response:
o    Are you skeptical of the sources’ credibility? Why or why not?
o    Do you detect any bias? Why or why not?
I would not be skeptical of the sources’ credibility.  Larry King is a well-known host and has many reputable people on his show.  He also has a reputation for being a reliable news source.  I feel sure that Larry King would have only credible sources on his show.  It was definitely an emotional subject but since bias means “unjust or impartial preference”, I did not find any from either individual.
  • Answer the following in regard to the video ad on one of the links above in a 100- to 200-word response:
o    Does the ad make a claim?
o    What fear or desire does the ad play into?
o    Does it target an existing fear or desire or does it try to create a new fear or desire?
o    Does it try to invoke feeling, use admirable people to persuade, or describe a common situation?
o    Would you make a purchase based on the information presented?
The Progressive ad I watched claims to be lower than several other well known insurance agents.  This plays in with everyone’s desire to have the same benefits for lower payments.  This desire already exists as people all over are losing their jobs or being reduced in hours.  We are all trying to find ways of saving money or stretch our dollars.  The Progressive lady, Flo, is a very upbeat individual and invokes a happy feeling just watching the ads, with all their bright colors and happy people.  She also invites you to watch her with her sunny personality as she explains the benefits of switching to Progressive.  She seems excited to be helpful and loves to save people money.  If I needed insurance this ad would definitely entice me to make a purchase with Progressive Insurance Company.
